Shared with us: Sonnet

We’ve been lucky enough that during our Culture @ Home programme some of our participants have felt confident and kind enough to share what they have worked on during our sessions with us.  Below is a sonnet that was shared to us by Sara-Jane Arbury after attending our session run by novelist and creative writing tutor, Sarah Bowers.  Participants were asked to collect 14 objects from around their homes without identifiers and use them to construct their work.

Sonnet written in Sarah Bower’s Sonnet Writing workshop on 24th June 2020

The chattering mouth opens and closes,

Pegs words to lines, thoughts flap, memories come,

My nan clicks her needles and a jumper appears,

My dad clips his tape measure to his faded jeans,

I strain tea for a friend from a perforated house,

An empty beer bottle still smells of swilled cheer,

Then the lightbulb blows, mushroom cloud,

A mash-up from spark to dark drawers, corners,

We dust shadows before the hidden power

In our nipppled, tubed bodies leaks out,

Beaded water clings to plugs, will not flow

On an Earth so functional, tight and compact,

Cut new shapes from the rolled-out world,

A star, a donkey, a snowman, a bird.

Potato masher, tape measure, toenail scissors, knitting needles, light bulb, empty beer bottle, AA battery, screwdriver, bathroom plug, toothbrush, peg, tea strainer, duster, pastry cutter

Week 6 – Steph Reeves (Gynormous Rawkus) – Junk Puppets

It’s week 6 of our Culture @ Home programme and we were lucky enough to have Steph Reeves of Gynormous Rawkus  join us this week to show us how to make a puppet out of the junk you have lying around at home and a few other materials.

This week is doubly special as our session took place as part of Children’s Art Week, a two-week celebration of free activities for children.

Our Culture at Home sessions as made possible thanks to Arts Council England Emergency Response funding, which has enabled us to pay creatives to share their talents with you at home, making it free for you!  We still have 7 sessions coming up, with each one being suitable for children, so to find out more and book a session (always at 2pm on a Wednesday), visit liveartlocal.co.uk/culture-home

To join this session you will need:

Cardboard; pens; scraps of paper or fabric; carrier bags; newspaper; tape (preferably double-sided and masking).  Pipe cleaners and other scraps are also very useful!

Culture @ Home week 3: Rosa Torr – Playwrighting for ZOOM performance

Join playwright and dramaturg, Rosa Torr as she hosts a workshop focused on writing for performance over ZOOM.  This session uses automatic writing exercises and gets the writer to think about how they can use the medium as a core part of the storytelling experience.  Due to its length it does not get down to the minutiae of writing for Zoom but seats it within the general framework for writing for performance, because of this the workshop may be best for those newer to playwrighting.

Creatives Wanted: Lead a Home is Where the Art is Workshop/Performance

we have had a few issues with some of the applications we have received so far, so please read all of the below, thank you
* please note you are applying to run one self-contained workshop and not a series over 13 weeks.  you can apply to run more than one workshop but must use a new application for each workshop. each workshop you submit MUST be different

Due to a successful funding application, Live Art Local is very happy to announce the launch of a new project, and as a result, ten paid opportunities for artists, musicians, singers, poets, writers, theatre-makers, and others over the course of the pandemic.

Over 13 weeks starting from the 13th of May (every Wednesday) we will be running a weekly workshop via Zoom for people to join in with at home.  We already have three of the workshops planned for but have openings for another ten.  We want you and your creativity to join us and run a workshop from your home, for people in their homes.

THE RULES:

Every workshop is an hour-long, must use, where possible, things most people are already likely to have at home, and they must positively, creatively engage people during this period of isolation and distancing, apart from that we have no criteria so feel free to let your imagination run wild.

As we are using the pro version of Zoom security should not be an issue and through this we can offer places for up to 100 people to join the workshop.  However, that is not to say your workshop has to be aimed at 100 people, it could be as little as five… it is up to you!

Artists will be paid the Friday following their workshop via paypal, where this is not possible we will arrange another way of making payment.

The fee for a workshop is £150, and we have a budget of up to £50 for materials, although we need to agree to these beforehand.

To apply please fill out the form below ASAP.  As mentioned previously this is to start very soon and so we have a small window to receive and assess applications.

Applications close on Friday 15th and we will notify successful applicants every three days from today so you will hear very soon whether you have been successful.

In exceptional circumstances, we will (where there is a small theatre company or music ensemble) make an exception to the workshop rule and permit a performance, though this will not affect the fee, and in these cases, unless the members of the company live together, strict social distancing rules (2m apart) must apply.

In the above circumstances, we will ask you to Livestream the performance with us and make a recording available so that we can make it available to those unable to join the livestream.  You retain copyright.

Please note as this is online we are able to accept applications from around the UK!
